In the music of Laica (Dave Fleet, aka MO75) there's a sense of something more concrete having been deliberately and forcibly rubbed away, leaving just a vague impression of a more tangible piece of music. The effect is haunting, the musical equivalent of trying to remember a dream when all that's left is the barest trace outline. Evoking memories of late Seventies industrial music and the ambient experiments of Global Communications, Laica's works occupy an atmospheric middle ground between grainy noise and more peaceful themes.
His most recent release, 2013's Puls (Rano) showcased a longform sonic template of subtle sonic evolutions and unpredictable left turns. For his latest project, Environs, Fleet has fused field recordings and blurry melodic gestures with the skeletal outline of what sounds like the inside of a vast malfunctioning machine in a post-apocalyptic fog.
Laica's contribution to MuteResponse is a reverential instrumental version of Depeche Mode's 'See You'.
